If you ask around, ‘what are calories’, I wonder how many people would actually know, given it’s a word so commonly used.
Calories is the amount of energy in a food.
For example, each food group has a different amount of calories per gram.
Fat has 9kcals per G.
Carbohydrates have 4kcals per G.
Proteins have 4kcals per G.
So when we have a meal, we can know how many calories roughly we are consuming.
The majorty of us in Britain however consume too many. 3/4s of us are Obese. That is staggering. Something needs to be done and I believe it’s education.
The average Male should consume 2500kcals per day.
The average woman, 2000kcals.
In a meal alone however (Especially at the weekend) you may consume up to 1000kcals.
To stay alive, the body will burn energy. The more you weigh, generally the more you burn. This can vary from 1200-2000+kcals a day. So it’s simply what we are eating and our lack of exercise that’s the problem.
The rule is very simple. Burn off what you eat.
My advice:
- Eat more wholemeal foods
- Eat more Fibre (we only use half the calories in fibre foods)
- Exercise more to a level of your ability for a longer duration of time and frequency.
- Cook more fresh meals.
- Drink more water
These simple tips will help with Obesity and the dreaded Calorie Counting.
